After years as the go-to shop in Aberdeen, My Meander opened in Velddrif late in 2024, where it offers a wide range of products at affordable prices. Monday 9-4Tuesday-Friday 9-5Saturday 9-12Sunday/holiday closed
From Angela, the owner of My Meander: My grandma had a 2nd hand shop in Aberdeen and then my mom asked her for one counter to sell a few baby clothes and such items. That one counter is currently inside the shop, on the left as you come in the door. After a while, my mom found that sharing shop space has its challenges, so she opened her own shop. Initially it was in the old chemist building where she rented for a while and then she bought her own building in Aberdeen. Her whole motiviation was to provide a wide variety of items, so people would not have to travel all the way to Graaff Reinet. I actually wanted to start a business like this about 10 years ago, but time and shop space were both scarce commodities. Then one day I was driving past and noticed the shop next door was available, so I called the rental agent. Unfortunately, someone had just taken the space. That evening the call came, that the other person had cancelled. In September 2024, I phoned my mom and told her we were opening a branch here. A month later, the lady let us know that the other shop was closing and we moved into our current premises. The logo is part of a painting. My parents went to a Meander Waterway area, in KZN, where there was an art expo. The lady that painted the picture has HIV. It was painted for HIV awareness. That is where the shop's name comes from. My parents moved to the West Coast in November 2024. My mom was here 5 months and then she passed away. People are welcome to browse, chat, relax and find interesting items in a lekker plek (nice place). Plans are afoot to start a Baking/ Jam making Club, where members get 5% discount on baking and jam making goods, like sugar, yeast, etc. Baking supplies are available, except for flour, which poses a risk of a weavle infestation. Storage practicalities will have to be considered before stocking items like flour. Other ideas for Clubs are welcome. Perhaps, something like arts and crafts or something similar. Drop us an email (below) to let us know some of your ideas.
